As sunscreen sprays continue to rise in popularity, so do the ingredients that are being referenced in their formulations, and we've introduced a few new ones below to learn more about what these ingredients can do together, and to help further our understanding of the product.
Dermothix 75 is a non-ionic thickener and rheology modifier that can be used as a replacement for alkanolamides in formulations such as lauramide or cocamide DEA. it is insoluble in water but binds to surfactants to form clear, viscous solutions. Because it is non-ionic, it is compatible with all types of surfactants such as cationic, anionic or amphoteric.Dermothix 100 is a water-soluble dimeric urethane in which the alcohol is 100 moles of ethoxylated stearyl alcohol. It is a nonionic thickener and rheology modifier that is compatible with all types of surfactants. Both of these ingredients are used in sunscreen formulations.
Sunobel AVB is an oil soluble, effective UVA absorber. It must be ensured that there is sufficient solubility in the formulation of the sunscreen spray to avoid recrystallisation during storage. It is incompatible with formaldehyde, which is primarily used as a preservative.
Sunobel OCT is a medium UVB absorber. It is an oil soluble, yellow, clear, viscous liquid. It is insoluble in water. It can be easily added to the oil phase of a formulation and the high sun protection factor can be used in combination with other UV filters.
We hope that this issue will bring a different understanding, and in the next issue we explain the application of a new ingredient in sunscreen, which has the same effect as sunscreen spray, but in a different form for both.
